With summer here and swimsuit and boating season in full swing, people are looking for ways to find their own fitness. So in light of that and my recent venture into this particular area, I thought I’d give you some tips on Interval Training.

Interval Training is Defined

The term interval training is actually a broad description for any kind of training that involves high intensity or anaerobic training combined with lower intensity or aerobic training.

According to Wikipedia, it is generally something that is for distance runners, but I am here to tell you that anyone can benefit from interval training, even if you are currently a dedicated couch potato.

Just to give you a quick example, instead of walking your kids to the park, let them take their bikes and scooters and go the long way. You can do simple interval training en route. The best thing is no special equipment is required! (Though I would definitely recommend a good pair of running or cross training shoes especially if you are serious.)

What Can Interval Training do for You?

Ithough it sounds pretty complex, interval training can actually be quite easy. Personally, I switch between walking and running. Instead of just going on a walk for exercise, I run for a block then walk for a block and repeat. Simple as it sounds, it makes for a pretty intense workout.

Here are just a few benefits: increases endurance, increases cardiovascular health, burns fat faster, helps build lean muscle, burns calories at a higher rate.

FYI, interval training was originally from Sweden, where they called it “fartlek”, meaning “speed play”.

How about some isometric workouts for the legs. You do not want to neglect the leg muscle development as it is as important as the rest of the body. There are a number of isometric exercises that you can utilize for the lower body.

For a squat exercise you can place your back against a wall and slide down till your thighs are parallel to the floor. Make sure your knees are behind your toes. Hold this position for about 10 seconds, relax and repeat.

Another variation of the squat is to go into the squat position just like you were really doing one with weight. Start at the lower position with thighs parallel to the floor, hold for about 10 seconds then raise up to the halfway point and hold another 10 seconds then raise up almost all the way and hold again.

You could do that going up and back down. Do this for a few reps and you will feel the burn. Try the same exercise with your feet spaced from close together to far apart to target the muscles differently.

The calves could also be exercised the same way. Raise up on your toes and hold for 10 seconds then lower yourself about halfway and hold again. While sitting, put one foot on top of the other and push the against each other then switch, you will target the front of the lower leg with this. Try hooking your toes under something immovable and lift your toes against it, this will also target the front of the lower leg.

Pregnancy and menopause may also disturb sleep. The well known symptom of hot flashes can cause sleeplessness as well. Menopause insomnia can make your days pretty long, fortunately there is a lot you can do to help yourself.
